What to do in Toronto…

Hockey Hall of Fame: Ice Hockey is a national pastime in Canada. Since 1994 it is Canada’s national winter sport. It is fitting then, that the National Hockey League Hall of Fame would be located in Canada. The NHL Hall of Fame was first established in Kingston, Ontario in 1943 and later moved to Toronto in 1993. The museum’s exhibits contain player biographies, NHL records, memorabilia, and trophies, including the Stanley Cup. As of 2012 there are 370 inductees in the NHL Hall of Fame, 255 of which are former players. Also as of 2012, there are 30 teams in the NHL, 7 of which are Canadian: the Edmonton Oilers, the Calgary Flames, the Vancouver Canucks, the Montreal Canadiens, the Ottawa Senators, and the Winnipeg Jets.

Toronto Islands: This chain of islands on the western part of Lake Ontario is an attractive tourist destination. The islands are home to a small residential community and the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. The islands, on which Europeans first settled in 1792, comprise the largest urban car-free community in North America. Activities here include biking, canoeing, swimming, Frisbee golf, and lounging on Hanlan’s Point Beach (clothing optional). The islands are also home to four yacht clubs: Harbour City Yacht Club, Island Yacht Club, Queen City Yacht Club, and the Royal Canadian Yacht Club. Public ferries and small transport planes take visitors to the islands all year round.

Yonge-Dundas Square: YD Square is a brightly lit commercial junction and public square in Downtown Toronto. It is also relatively new. The square was built in 2002 as part of an effort to revitalize the Yonge Street and Dundas Street areas. Over the past decade, the square has hosted several public events performances, and art displays and served an average of 100,000 pedestrians every day. The square’s many large LCD and LED screen advertisements have led many to refer to it as “Toronto’s Times Square.” Several landmark buildings surround the square such as: Toronto Eaton Centre, Ryerson University, Ed Mirvish Theater, Atrium on Bay, and the Rogers Media building.

CN Tower: The CN Tower is a communications and observation tower, and the largest, most recognizable structure in Toronto. At 553.33 meters (1,815.4 ft.) tall, the CN Tower was the tallest freestanding structure in the world until 2010. Inside the tower’s observation deck (the SkyPod) is a 360-degree restaurant. In 2011 the tower opened EdgeWalk, an amusement in which visitor can walk around the top of the SkyPod (outside) at 356 meters (1,168 ft.) above the Earth. The “CN” stands for Canadian National, the railway company that built the tower. They completed the tower in 1976 at a cost of C$63 million (US$243 million in 2012 dollars). By the 1990s buildings such as the Metro Toronto Convention Centre and the Skydome had been built around the tower. Today the tower sits in the middle of a thriving building development district. Over 2 million people visit the CN Tower every year. In 1995 the American Society of Civil Engineers named the tower one of the modern Seven Wonders of the World.

Toronto City Hall: Toronto’s City Hall is one of the city’s other most recognizable landmarks. The building, which houses the Toronto’s municipal government, consists of two curved towers, one 20 stories and the other 27 stories. Between the two curved towers is a saucer-like council chamber. It was designed in 1961 by architect Bruce Kuwabara and completed in 1965 at a cost of C$31 million (C$221 million in 2012 dollars). At the time, many Torontonians complained that the building was too futuristic-looking for the city. Fifty years later, many still consider it a blight. Despite what all the haters say, the Toronto City Hall is still a major architectural achievement and a landmark in Toronto’s downtown area.

Casa Loma: Casa Loma is a Gothic Revival style castle-house and gardens in midtown Toronto. Famed architect E.J. Lennox designed Casa Loma (Spanish for Hill House) in 1911 and the construction on the building completed in 1914. It took 300 workers and C$3.5 million to build the mansion. With 98 rooms, it was the largest private residence in Canada upon completion. Since 1937, it has operated as a museum. The building is most known for its architecture and collection of antiques from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The castle is also equipped with an elevator, ox-sized oven, a central vacuum, and secret passageways. As of 2012 this popular tourist attraction is undergoing major renovations.
