Las Vegas, Nevada Executive Search City Snapshot: Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas; “Sin City,” the “City of Second Chances,” and the “Entertainment Capital of the World.” We have just arrived in city unlike any other. There are slot machines in the bathrooms, there’s pornography all over the street, and if you’re not drinking by 11am you feel out of place. For God’s sake let’s get to the hotel, it’s 120 degrees and this cab has no air conditioning!

In 1829 the Spanish explorer Raphael Rivera became the first non-Native American to set foot in the present day Las Vegas Valley. After Nevada became a state in 1855, Brigham Young traveled to the region helped his missionaries convert the native Paiute people to Mormonism. But, the Mormons abandoned the area during the 1857 Utah War and Las Vegas remained desolate for another half century. It wasn’t until the early 1900s that the city of Las Vegas was established as a railroad town. In 1911 Las Vegas became incorporated into the state of Nevada.

In 1936, the Hoover Dam was completed 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas. The dam formed Lake Mead, the largest man-made lake and reservoir in the US. By 1931 gambling had been legalized in Nevada. The stars were aligning for organized crime bosses like Bugsy Siegel and Meyer Lansky who envisioned a gambling mecca in the Nevada desert. These organized crime bosses, with the help of several Manhattan Project scientists, transformed the city into a tourist destination.

In the 1950s Las Vegas was a cutthroat environment in which only the strong survived. Convicted felon Benny Binion came to Vegas and opened Binion’s Horseshoe Casino, the first casino to offer super high limit gambling. Pretty soon he became rich and famous, and everyone just sort of forgot about all the people he killed in Dallas. Several other criminals such as Tony “the Ant” Spilotro, Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal, “Fat Herbie” Blitzstein, John Caifano, and Donald “The Wizard of Odds” Angelini established betting and prostitution operations in the city over the years. Some became kings and others were buried out in the desert.

The next time you visit Las Vegas remember: the house always wins, never play with more than you can afford to lose, it takes money to make money, always double an 11, split your 8s, and consider the vig when weighing the odds on the over/under against the point line. Just be sure to save enough money to make it back to your job on Monday. As one comedian put it, “what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, except for the STDs.”
