Public sector jobs have never been more in demand. Providing economic stability, room for advancement and the opportunity to make an impact, public sector positions are a great option in a sometimes-unsteady, always competitive economy. But how exactly does one enter the public service? While having basic knowledge of government rules and regulations is required in our candidates, we also look for the following:

Indianapolis, Indiana Executive Search City Snapshot: Welcome to Indianapolis, the capital city of Indiana. Known as “Indy,” “The Circle City,” and “The Racing Capital of the World,” Indianapolis is an exciting Midwestern city with a unique history. Throughout its nearly 200-year existence, Indianapolis has produced several famous individuals including: Larry Bird, John Dillinger, Steve Ells, Vivica A. Indiana became a state in 1816. In 1821 the new state commissioned Alexander Ralston to design a capital city near the state’s center and by the White River. The city became known as Indianapolis, which in Greek means “Indiana City.” Indianapolis was also built along the Cumberland Roach, which was the first major interstate road built by the federal government. Traffic continued through the city after the Madison and Indianapolis railroad began operation in 1847.

The city’s population grew rapidly in the early half of the 20th century as many people moved to Indianapolis in search of jobs in the manufacturing industry. In the early 1900s Indianapolis battled Detroit for leader in the automobile manufacturing industry. Indianapolis companies such as Duesenberg, Marmon Motor Car Company, Stutz Motor Company, American Motor Company, Perry Auto Company, and Premier Motor Manufacturing were doing well until Ford put them out of business.

Today, Indianapolis is not as reliant on its manufacturing industry. However, auto racing continues to be a huge part of the city’s culture. While Peyton Manning brought the Colts back into the national spotlight a few years ago, the city’s roots are deep in basketball. The 1986 film Hoosiers depicts the story of Milan High School’s 1954 state championship team. Several scenes in the film were shot in Indianapolis’ Butler Fieldhouse at Butler University. While many aspects of the movie are over-dramatized and some of its facts exaggerated, the film’s depiction of Indiana’s basketball culture is genuine.

Indianapolis’ population rose every decade since its foundation except the 1970s when many white people moved out to the suburbs. In 2010 the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area totaled 1.83 million people. Although racial tensions in Indianapolis grew high in the 1960s and 1970s, the city is one of the least segregated major cities today. A University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee study showed that 25% of Indianapolis’ population lives on a block with both white and black residents.

Indianapolis is a very young city. 22.64% of its total population is 11 years old or younger and 6.7% is 65 or over. At the same time only 17.53% of the U.S. population is 11 years old or younger and 11.9% is 65 or older. There are not many immigrants in the city, as foreign-born residents make up only 4.6% of the population. Also, 12-24 year olds make up a smaller percentage of the city population than the national population. This indicates that Indianapolis families tend to have many children who grow up and leave town.
