In 2010, 19.5% of Phoenix residents were foreign born with 15.5% coming from Latin America. This is much higher than Arizona’s foreign-born rate of 12.8%. That isn’t even accounting for the estimated 360,000 illegal immigrants in Arizona (strict immigration laws have reduced this number since 2010). Also in 2010, 68.8% of the population 5 years old and over spoke English only. Of the other 31.2%, 27.6% spoke Spanish and 14.1% spoke English less than “very well.”
