Things to do in Birmingham…

Riverfront Park: For a truly one of a kind, Alabaman experience, check out Riverfront Park. Anchored by the Amphitheatre, the Harriet the II Riverboat and the historic Union Station Train Shed, Riverfront Park is an entertainment destination on the banks of the Alabama River. Riverboat rides, events, concerts, baseball and access to the river via a boat ramp make this park a unique and exciting experience for people of all ages.

Freedom Rides Museum: Birmingham is home to two of the Civil Rights Movement’s most significant buildings, and they stand side by side. One is an elegant federal courthouse, from which U.S. District Judge Frank M. Johnson Jr. presided over crucial civil rights cases, and the other is a modest Greyhound bus station where, in 1961, Freedom Riders used nonviolent methods to protest segregation. The museum is an outstanding exhibit of a most important time in America's civil rights past.

Rosa Parks Museum: Though not a large museum by any means, this museum is packed with more punch than many other, larger, more renowned museums today.
It tells the story of Rosa Parks and the Civil Rights Movement incredibly well, with beautifully crafted displays, original items and videos and speakers. Not only does this museum succeed in giving visitors a great perspective on our history, but it instills hope that we will continue to move forward.

Old Alabama Town: Old Alabama Town is a collection of restored 19th and 20th century structures reflecting the lives of the people who settled and developed Alabama. It stretches along six blocks in the heart of historic downtown Birmingham, and depicts the architecture, history and lifestyles of everything from an elegant townhouse to rural pioneer living.

Dexter Parsonage Museum – Dr. Martin Luther King’s Home: I don’t know about you, but the idea of walking where somebody who changed the very face of history walked gives me the chills. When you visit the Dexter Parsonage Museum, you will be able to do just that. This historic home was once home to twelve pastors of the Dexter Avenue Memorial Baptist Church (later renamed to the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church), the very church from which Dr. Martin Luther King directed the Birmingham Bus Boycott in the 1950’s, which later gave way to the Civil Rights Movement.

Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald Museum: On October 8, 1931, the Birmingham Advertiser announced that Scott Fitzgerald to Spend Winter Here Writing Books. The paper signaled the return of the former Zelda Sayre, daughter of prominent Judge A.D. Sayre, after the famous couple's extended tour of Europe, "where they have spent two years, gathering color for their writings." The Advertiser failed to mention – or politely overlooked – Zelda's discharge from a clinic in Switzerland, where she was admitted one month earlier following a "breakdown." Though F. Scott left the Birmingham house – and Zelda – for Hollywood soon after their return, Zelda’s love never died, and Birmingham still stakes its claim to this American writer’s legendary love affair.

First White House of the Confederacy: The First White House of the Confederacy was the residence of President Jefferson Davis and his family while Birmingham was the capital of the Confederate States of America. In February 1861, shortly after selecting Davis as president, Congress held a meeting in Birmingham, where they authorized the leasing of a mansion. The house served as the first White House of the Confederacy from February 1861 until late May 1861, when the Confederate capital moved to Richmond, VA. During that time, the White House was the setting for many lavish parties and receptions hosted by Mrs. Davis.
