Baltimore has a lot of offer career wise, that much is clear – but when you’re not working, what is there to look forward to? Well, one very important factor to consider when contemplating a move is the weather. Daily, Baltimore temperatures are right around the national average, ranging from 65°F to 90°F in summer months and from 25° to 45° in the winter. National average daily temperatures are between 65° and 85° in the summer and 30° to 50° in the winter.
The temperatures are nice, but if you’re seriously considering a move to Baltimore, you need to take into account the excessive rainfall, below average sunshine and above average snowfall each year. On average, the national rainfall is about 3 inches each month. Monthly rainfall in Baltimore is greater than 3 inches year round with the wettest months being March, May, and September. Humidity and wind speed levels are both near national averages, while sunshine levels are somewhat below US averages in the summer. Snowfall levels are slightly above average and can reach up to 7 inches per month in the winter.
For many people, a job is a job is a job, but for many others, weather can play a huge determining factor when considering a move. Clearly, weather preferences vary from person to person. If these conditions sound ideal, then Baltimore might be the right fit for you. If not, you may want to reconsider moving to Baltimore.
A day out on the town…
Baltimore Inner Harbor: The Inner Harbor is a historic seaport and tourist attraction on the Patapsco River. There are several museums at and near the Inner Harbor, including: the American Visionary Art Museum, Baltimore Museum of Industry, the Civil War Museum, and the Jewish Museum of Maryland. Also, floating in the harbor are several historical ships to see, such as: the USCGC Taney (the last fighting ship still afloat that survived Pearl Harbor), the USS Torsk (the last ship to sink an enemy vessel in WWII), and the USS Constellation (the last Civil-War era ship still afloat). There are also many other attractions to see at the Inner Harbor, including: the National Aquarium in Baltimore, Maryland Science Center, the Pier 6 Concert Pavilion, Holocaust Memorial, and the Babe Ruth birthplace and museum. In 2009, Urban Land Institute described the Inner Harbor as “the model for post-industrial waterfront redevelopment around the world.”
C & O Canal National Historic Park: The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park is a United States National Historical Park that extends 184.5 miles from Georgetown, Washington D.C. to Cumberland, Maryland. The canal operated from 1831 to 1924 and served primarily as a way to transport coal from the Allegheny Mountains to Washington D.C. Dwight D. Eisenhower established the park as a National Monument to preserve the area along the Potomac River. Today, visitors can take restored mule-powered canal boats from Great Falls to Georgetown or hike/bike through the Potomac River Valley.
Washington Monument: Wait, the Washington Monument? Yes, the original Washington Monument is in Baltimore, Maryland! This obelisk monument was the first statue designed by Robert Mills to honor George Washington. Mills also designed the Washington Monument in Washington D.C., but the Baltimore monument predates the other by over 30 years. This statue is made of white marble and stands 178 feet tall.
Mount Vernon Place Historical District: The Mount Vernon district in Baltimore is one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods. Many historical landmarks reside in this “Cultural District,” including: the Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, the Stafford Hotel, the old Mount Vernon Hotel, the Belvedere Hotel, and the Washington Monument. Although mainly residential, Mount Vernon is home to a mix of culture-defining institutions such as: Walters Art Museum, University of Baltimore, Maryland Historical Society, Maryland Institute College of Art, Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, Baltimore School for the Arts, Lyric Opera House, Spotlighters Theater, and Eubie Blake National Jazz Institute.
Camden Yards: Camden Yards is a major league baseball field and home of the Baltimore Orioles. Built in 1992, Camden Yards is the first of the “retro” style major league ballparks. It’s located just west of the Inner Harbor in downtown Baltimore, in the Camden Yards sports complex. Also part of the Camden Yards Sports Complex is M&T Bank Stadium, home of the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens.
Edgar Allen Poe House and Museum: Edgar Allen Poe is one of America’s most famous writers. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts but lived (and ultimately died) in Baltimore, Maryland. His Baltimore home at 203 Amity Street was turned into a museum to pay homage to his work. Poe was one of the first American writers to make a living writing alone and as a result, struggled financially and failed to gain much of a reputation for his work during his lifetime. The tiny house gives visitors a glimpse into the mind of the famous poet and master of horror.
